Kevin Costner is the patriarch of a dynastic ranch as big as some countries. His lifestyle is constrained by resort developers, tribal rights and the authority of the state of Montana. He tries to hold on to the old ways, reminiscent of Rock Hudson in “Giants.” “Yellowstone” moves quickly and without much introduction, yet the story unfolds at the natural pace of a day in the wilderness, with breaks for tribal rituals, cowboy conventionalities and political machinations.
The land and family are his lifeblood
It’s a far-flung endeavor that traverses the intersection of laws and justice, family and friendships.Costner seems to step into his character’s shoes naturally. He’s a world-weary man who has seen too much and lied too often. He can hear the footsteps coming his way, but he can only fulfill his role out of habit as much as loyalty.Though some actions are a little confusing due to a lack of explanation, it feels natural, as if the viewer is getting a real glimpse into another world’s life.

I hope the resolution of this saga includes an emotional payoff that justifies its breadth and attention to detail.Update 7/20/18: After four episodes, this series has a strong voice and a consistent rhythm. We experience the fullness of each story, from the roots to the fruits. I’m raising my grade to a “9.” A new season of “Silo” is one of this month’s biggest TV and streaming premieres.
